The Adversary

I think you should realise by now
your house is going one way
and you the other.
Your house is into dust collecting,
keeping spiders in the corner,
feeding the silverfish
racing around when you're on holiday
getting a few cobwebs up,
nursing a little bit of dry rot
it got itself for Christmas.

It's not a place for you
to lie back and be content,
thinking because you set about it one day
it's going to be with you the next.
It's a battle
you're never going to win -
when you come back home
from wherever else you've been,
it's as much as your house can do
to let you in.
